RIDING DISTANCE
56+ miles over the 3-day tour.
ELEVATION
2,000 – 4,000 feet
RIDER LEVEL
Strong intermediate to advanced. This trail includes many technical sections and steep climbs.
TERRAIN & TRAILS
While this is a “river trail”, it is anything but flat. The mileage, at first glance, will not seem like much, but expect full days in the saddle. Expect climbing, descending, tight switchbacks, exposed sections and numerous technical mountain biking features. The scenery includes amazing river canyon views with clear creeks, lush forests, and steep hillsides.
RECOMMENDED CLOTHING & GEAR
Prepare for three full days of riding, so bring adequate clothing, including riding gloves and layers for a variety of weather. Hydration packs are necessary for carrying food and water. Helmets are required for all rides. We are also camping, so appropriate camp attire will include long pants, camp shoes and insulating layers for cool nights and mornings. Bring a swimsuit for dipping in the river!
*There is poison oak on the sides of the trail on at least 2 of the 3 days of riding on the Umpqua. Bring precautionary measures or extra-clothing if you are sensitive to poison oak.
DAY ZERO
After meeting in Bend at Cog Wild headquarters, we will load up and start driving down to the Umpqua region. We will stop for dinner along the way. Once we arrive at the Steamboat Inn, we will be able to unpack and prepare for the next three days of amazing riding!
DAY ONE
We’ll start off the tour with a ride from Steamboat Inn on some of the fastest, smoothest trail of the trip. At first, the trail contours up and away from the river to a viewpoint high up in the river canyon. Keep an eye out for soaring raptors such as eagles, osprey and peregrine falcons. From this high point, you will be rewarded with a long, continuous downhill back to the river. After the ride, we’ll visit a favorite swimming hole to cool off. Then relax at cabin with a cooler full of cold Deschutes Brewery beer while the guides prepare a delicious dinner to get you ready for tomorrow!
Mileage: 18 – 25 miles
DAY TWO
Today’s ride takes us through some of the most spectacular country in Oregon. As we head upriver, you may see some migrating Chinook salmon and Steelhead heading up river to spawn. We’ll climb more today than on the previous day, but the pay off will be descending smooth, flowing singletrack to an old growth forest. Evening activities may include a soak in the hot springs, or a swim in the North Umpqua River.
Mileage: 19 – 28 miles
DAY THREE
Our journey starts above Lemolo Lake, at the very top of the North Umpqua River Trail. Within the first mile we’ll check out the 102-foot high Lemolo Falls. “Lemolo” means “wild” or “untamed” in the Native Chinook language, and you’ll discover this namesake as we continue down the rugged canyon. We’ll follow the North Umpqua River along steep forested slopes and over tight rocky stream crossings, past the weeping wall of basalt rock, to our destination at Toketee Lake. The trail includes rollers and banks for those looking for some bonus airtime. By the end of the day you will have the satisfaction of completing one of the best rides in the country!
Mileage: 19 – 26 miles
