McKenzie River & Old Cascade Crest Region Adventures

The McKenzie River and Old Cascade Crest region have so much to offer advanced mountain bikers; you’ll need at least a few days of riding to get familiar with the region. Join Cog Wild for a multi-day mountain bike adventure in the McKenzie River and Old Cascade Crest Region to get away from it all and refill your bucket.

We’ve been riding here since 2006 and the trails still feel remote and pristine. Even though access to these trails is made much easier with Cog’s support, expect an ‘earn your turns” feel to the rides.

Day Trips in McKenzie & OCC Region

Single Day Adventures

Multi-Day Mountain Bike Adventures in McKenzie & Old Cascade Crest

Day 0

Meet in Bend at noon and travel to our campsite near the headwaters of the famous McKenzie River. We’ll do a ride from camp to stretch our legs and make sure our bikes and bods are working well. Plan for a meet and greet happy hour at 5 PM, followed by dinner. We’ll continue getting to know each other around the campfire then retire to rest up for a big day of riding.

Mileage: approximately 10 miles

Day 1

After a hearty breakfast, we’ll ride the classic McKenzie River Trail. World renowned for amazing waterfalls, technical lava riding and a deep rainforest feel, the MRT is quintessential NorthWest riding. 27 miles in length, and every inch is worthy. Don’t be fooled, even though we head downriver, our legs will be plenty tired by the time we return to camp for food and chillaxing.

Mileage: 15 to 27 miles

Day 2

We’ll shuttle up to a high start point and ride O’Leary, King Castle and Castle Rock Trails. With around 4000′ of descending with 1200′ climbing throughout this day, we will maximize high quality riding. A little off the beaten path, these trails are narrow and pristine. Before heading back to camp for the evening, we have the option for a side trip to Belknap Hot Springs, pack your swimsuit 🙂

Mileage: about 20 miles

Day 3

After breaking camp, we’ll head up to the Old Cascade Crest where we’ll ride through old growth forests, across expansive meadows and take in massive views of nearly all the peaks in the Cascade Range. Steep, rugged and rarely ridden, the OCC trails are a hoot to ride with the best dirt you can dream of.

Mileage: 10 to 20 miles

Not for the faint of heart, the water in the McKenzie River & Old Cascade Crest Region is chilly but you’ll want to jump in anyway.

Upper Umpqua & Timpanogas Region Adventures

The North Umpqua Trail has been hit hard by fire and extreme weather the past few years and it needs time to heal and lots of trail work before we’re able to ride all 79 miles of the trail again. But there is still so much good riding in the region and we love being here. The Upper Umpqua is really close to Oakridge’s “outer limits” so we’re combining our favorite rides in this remote high country region for a few days of shredding and being immersed in the outdoors.

Multi Day Mountain Bike Adventures

We’ve revamped our classic Umpqua multi-day trip and honestly the singletrack experience is better. Four days of riding now it includes the best segments of the North Umpqua Trail and our favorite high country trails near Timpanogas Lake on the cascade crest. Our campsite is situated nicely to maximize riding in both areas.

Day 0

Meet in Bend at noon and travel to our campsite near the headwaters of the North Umpqua River. If you are driving up from the south, you are welcome to meet the group at the campsite. We’ll do an afternoon ride from camp to stretch our legs and make sure the bikes are working well. Meet and greet happy hour at 5 PM, followed by dinner. We’ll continue getting to know each other around the campfire then retire to rest up for a big day of riding.

Mileage: less than 10 miles

Day 1

After a hearty breakfast, we’ll travel to Timpanogas Lake to ride the high country trails: Sawtooth, Cowhorn and head of the Willamette. Eat well since we’re going big today: technical climbs, mandatory hike a bike sections to steep descents. A swim in the lake is highly recommended before returning to camp for dinner and relaxation.

Mileage: 15- 20 miles

Day 2

Today is classic PNW riding. We’ll ride the Middle Fork of the Willamette, a technical river trail with miles of fun riding. Then jump back in the van for a Moon Point shuttle above the river canyon, an almost all downhill 7 mile ripper going through multiple climate zones and trail types. From chunky rock to tear inducing speeds, this trail is always a crowd pleaser.

Mileage: 20-34 miles

Day 3

After breaking camp, we’ll take a big bite out of the NUT as we ride the upper segments of this classic trail. Start with Lemolo, Dread and Terror then Hot Springs and if you still have gas in the tank try for Deer Leap too. After a dip in the North Umpqua River and a farewell cheers, the van will return to Bend and we’ll return to the world refreshed and content from three plus days of fantastic mountain biking.

Mileage: 15 to 30 miles

You’ll want to cool off in Indigo Lake after descending down from the ridge.

2024 Dates:

  • June 20th-23rd
  • July 25th-28th

The Upper Umpqua / Timpanogas multi-day trip is best suited to high intermediate and expert riders who enjoy suffering through mandatory hike a bike sections and big climbs to fully appreciate long descents, technical roots and rocks, numerous stream crossings and miles of ultra-fun riding.

FAQ

I have already done the Bachelor to Bend tour? Should I do it again?

Yes! There are several different ways to ride from Mt. Bachelor to Bend, and we can take you on a different route each time, with few trail repeats. This means that you will see new trails each time.

My friends and I want to do this tour together, but some of us ride faster/slower than the rest of the group. Is this a problem?

Not at all! The trails in Bend are not very technical, which is what slows most people down in other places. Once we have details about all the riders we will choose a route that will help keep everyone together. Depending on the size of the group, we will have more than one guide to allow everyone to be able to ride at their own pace without getting too far ahead or left behind.

Can I bring my own bike?

Yes, of course! If you are traveling with your mountain bike, we ask that it is in good working order. Hard tails, full suspension, 27” and 29er bikes are all appropriate for our trails.

How much water should I have with me?

Cog Wild will provide each rider with one water bottle for you to keep after the ride. However, we recommend carrying at least a few water bottles or a full hydration bladder for your full day ride. There is not a place to refill water along the trail, so you will need to start the ride with all of your water for the day.

Traveling with an E-bike? Please read:

The Deschutes National Forest does not allow e-bikes on the non-motorized trails. This includes the vast majority of mountain biking trails that we guide and shuttle.

Multi Day Mountain Bike Adventures in the Mt. Hood Region

Famous for windsurfing and kiteboarding, the Hood River area also has fantastic mountain biking that combines classic Oregon singletrack with stunning scenery. Join Cog Wild for a mountain bike adventure in the Mt. Hood Region, where we ride up close to the iconic mountain and deep into the river canyons on its lower flanks.

The well designed trails here have big views, techy flow, deep forested sections, meadows and creek crossings and some old school freeride and jump trails. Choose from pre scheduled trips or select your own dates for your group. Not into multi days? Try a single day mountain bike adventure in the Mt. Hood Region out of our Bend location.

Multi-Day Mountain BikeAdventures in the Mt. Hood Region

Day 0

Meet in Bend at noon and travel to our campsite in the Mt Hood region. Meeting at our campsite at 3pm is an option as well. A quick afternoon ride to help get to know the group. Meet and greet happy hour at 5 PM, followed by dinner, stories around the campfire and star gazing.

Day 1

After a hearty breakfast, we’ll head to Post Canyon for a day of riding. Post is a spider web of a trail system with longer xc trails, jump lines and shuttle-able DH trails. Early Freeriders adopted Post Canyon in the late 90’s, so look for classic wood features and skinnys.

Day 2

A good day for a high country ride. We will get up close to Mt. Hood today on the 44 trails, named after the forest road that intersects these trails. 15 mile Creek, 8 mile Creek High Prairie, 5 Mile lookout and Knebal Springs are all options for great loops or shuttles. High meadows and deep forests await a big day on the trail. Celebrate our last night in camp with a healthy dinner and cheers to big adventure.

Day 3

After our last breakfast and breaking camp, We will head for a big point to point ride. Starting high up on the flanks of Mt Hood and ending along the banks of the Hood River, expect long downhills and more great views. There is still plenty of climbing and traversing to keep us honest. A splash in the cold river is “mandatory” before heading home tired and happy.
