Ability Definitions & Requirements

Absolute Beginners Not Recommended

“Absolute Beginner” is a rider who has from zero to a few days of experience riding on trails. Or it may be a rider who is not sure they truly enjoy mountain biking yet. While each rider progresses at his or her own pace, typically these riders need one-on-one attention to ensure their safety and safety of the group. We have some specific clinics to introduce these skills and we ask that absolute beginners communicate with us before you register.

Enthusiastic Beginners are Welcome

  • Wants to ride!
  • Has ridden a mountain bike on dirt and enjoys trails
  • Can start, shift and stop without assistance on easy terrain
  • Can stand up to pedal for short distances
  • Can stand up with feet on level pedals to avoid obstacles

Beginner riders should begin here and progress to the Intermediate camps — talk to your coaches about what opportunities are best for you. If you’re not sure of your rider’s ability, it’s better to go with the more introductory camp; and it’s OK for some younger or older riders to join in certain situations with Coach approval so we can maintain peer groups / maturity levels and ride plans appropriate for the entire group.

Intermediate / Experienced Riders Welcome:

For those who have gone through our after school, summer camps or clinics and have experience riding on blue trails with larger features, bigger terrain and rides over 2.5 hours and want more! We do not have an “Advanced” classification since all of these riders are still young enough to be working on the main mountain bike progressions. We may include modules like “Maneuvers” and “Jumping” if the groups are ready.

Mandatory for Participation:

  • Riders must be of the minimum age by the start date of the camp
  • Positive Attitude
  • Riders must have some experience riding a bike off-road
  • Need a fully working mountain bike suitable for riding on a trail
  • Helmet
  • Water in a bottle on the bike or in a pack
  • Come prepared to ride with proper clothing & closed shoes

Highly Recommended:

  • Items are best carried 1) on your bike in a saddle / frame bag 2) waist pack 3) small backpack. Riders do not need huge 100oz hydration packs 🙂
  • Extra tube for your wheel size
  • Multi-tool & Pump
  • Full finger gloves
  • Sunglasses with light lenses — keep out dust and see in the forest

Other Suggestions for youth:

  • Get the lightest bike you can afford and opt for the largest wheelsize with the smallest frame that fits your child.
  • Gears not necessary until they’re on 20″ wheels
  • Bikes must have 2 brakes — either both handbrakes or a front handbrake with rear coaster. Coaster brakes are more difficult for proper descending.

Skills Progression Example

One sample outline is listed here, but camps will be flexible enough to accommodate returning riders and create enough variety so that riders are always progressing.

  • Monday: assessments, skills introductions and easy ride / shuttle
  • Tuesday: longer ride in groups to have fun and identify skills that need refinement
  • Wednesday: skills focus day, shorter riding, more time for feedback from coaches to riders
  • Thursday: put skills to good use with a shuttle and longer ride
